How to Make “Where You Live” Feel More Like a “Home”

For a lot of us where we live doesn’t necessarily feel like it’s a home, especially if you’ve only recently moved or you don’t have much space to work with. But there is no need to fret! By following just a few of these handy tips, you’ll make where you live feel more like a home in no time at all.

Layers, layers, layers

When you have a space that feels cold or bare, but you just don’t know what to do with it, I have one word for you: layers. Have a floor that feels too open – put down a rug. Your couch looks uninviting – use a throw and add some cushions. Your bedroom feels bare and cold – add another blanket, cushions, sheets and more. You don’t need to go overboard here, but even adding another layer to a room or a bit of furniture can make a drastic difference. Go ahead, give it a go!

Break out the Photos

When your home is new, and it doesn’t have many warm memories tied to it, it can sometimes feel a little impersonal. Hanging or displaying some photos of family, friends or events is a really simple way to insert your own personal mark to your home. I’ve found this to make the process of acclimatising to a new home so much faster, and it really helps you to relax and feel at ease in your own space.

Celebrate Colour

Homes that are filled with neutral colours can often feel more muted and like they have less personality. An easy way to inject some charisma into your home is to play around with different colours. Adding a splash of colour where possible can really help you to add your own touch to your home. Don’t worry, this doesn’t necessarily mean laying down newspapers and repainting your whole home. Adding some vibrant cushions to the couch, display some brightly coloured ornaments, trying a new style of upholstery or adding an accent wall are all easier approaches that will help to break up the monotony and make your home, yours.

Plant Life

Just like with adding a splash of colour, displaying some plant life in your home will help break up the decorations and let you add a bit more of your own personality. Now don’t be worried if you don’t exactly have a green thumb, there are lots of well-made artificial plants that you can pick up, that will have mostly the same effect.
